It's been a busy month! Thanks so much for your help and support with the Valentine social and our field trip. Both events were super fun and engaging. We are continuing on showing kindness in the classroom and all around campus. We have also been working on letter writing, main idea, problem-solving, and studying objects in the sky. We will continue to work hard and focus on providing text evidence when answering comprehension questions in reading. We will also continue with math review and discuss the characteristics of 2-D and 3-D shapes.
If you did not get a chance to make a donation for our field trip, it is not too late to do so! Any amount will help pay for the bus rental. Thanks so much for your consideration. We hope everything is going great with you and your families!
Sincerely, The First Grade Team
January News: Happy New Year, Hexter Hawks! Testing is over for a few months (yay!) and we will be relaying score results with you at Parent Conference Night on January 24. We are super proud of our first graders. They did a really great job and have really learned a lot in a short amount of time. Thank you for your help and support at home! We could not have done it without you!
We are so excited about the new year and have a lot in store for the new six weeks. In writing, we will be writing biographies using the writing process. In Reading, we will continue with reading strategies and focusing on comparing and contrasting in both fiction and nonfiction genres. During Math time, we will be reviewing all of our problem-solving skills and working on skip counting. In Social Studies, we will be learning about the life and importance of Martin Luther King Jr. Just as a reminder, there will be no school on Monday, January 16 to celebrate Martin Luther King Day.
Please be on the lookout for school communication through Tuesday folders, the Hexter website, and our First Grade website for upcoming events. Homework/Newsletter packets also have up to date information for you as well. Thanks and have a wonderful day!
Sincerely, The First Grade Team
October News: Hello First Grade Families! We have been working so incredibly hard this month. In Writing, we have been working on the writing process. We spend each day working on using complete sentences. We are also working on adding adjectives and sensory details to our work. In Reading, we are working on reading independently and retelling stories using the words Beginning, Middle, and End. In Math, we are solving addition and subtraction word problems using a variety of strategies. Our first graders are really getting the hang of the rigorous math vocabulary too. During our Social Studies time, we have been discussing our government system and the importance of voting. We will be having a mock election in the month of November. The students are very excited to fill out their ballots! Thank you for all of your hard work and support. We appreciate all that you do to ensure a successful year for all of our first graders!
Sincerely, The First Grade Team
November News: Hello! We have just completed another 6 weeks! Report cards will be going home, Tuesday, November 15. Our first graders have really shown a lot of growth and are working on increasing their reading levels. Just a reminder that our expectation is for each student to read at a level 10 or higher by January.
We have been super busy in first grade! We are currently working on retelling stories with lots of details and using academic language during our discussions. In writing, we are writing about the history of Thanksgiving and focusing on complete sentences. During math time, we have been finding the missing number in a number sentence (in both addition and subtraction). We are also discussing how important it is to be thankful and have been sharing the many traditions and customs each of our Hexter families celebrate with. With that said, we want to thank you for all you have done to support your children and the first grade team so far. We are so very thankful for you and could not make all of these great gains without you. Enjoy your break with your families November 21-25.
